BREAKING NEWS: Civil Rights Giant Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth Has Died At 89

Source: Michael Martinez, / CNN

The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, who helped lead the civil rights movement, has died, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute said Wednesday. He was 89.

Shuttlesworth is among the iconic figures honored in the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta. King once called Shuttlesworth “the most courageous civil rights fighter in the South.”

When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against segregated busing in Montgomery, Alabama, Shuttlesworth rallied the membership of a group he established in May 1956 — the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights — to challenge the practice of segregated busing in Birmingham.

Shuttlesworth also helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, with King and other civil rights leaders.

    I truly sorry about this.

  • My Condolences to this Family and I pray God’s Encouragement and Strength upon his wife and family. I met his wife and looked forward to meeting him though he was in a feeble condition. My home burnt up on August 25th and I told my wife that Rev. Shuttleworth’s and Family phone number was in my address book. Today I wish I had access to that number. He was certainly a foot soldier for Christ and the Civil Rights Movement. We should model ourselves accordingly.

I want to say thank you to Roland Martin for a rip roaring commencement address Sunday May 6 at the prestigious and Historic Lincoln University in Pensylvania. As usual Mr. Martin was unapolageticly direct, honest, witty, and on point with his topic of discussion. He challenge the graduating class to be fearless as the previous generations of civl rights pioneers. He chalenged us to stand up to injustice, speak the truth even when it entails making sacrifice to achieve a just goal. In his closing remarks, Martin urged the 2012 Lincoln Univrsity graduatng class to give back to our prestgous HBCU in order to preserve the opporunity for future graduating classes.
