As Newt Gingrich inches closer to front-runner Mitt Romney ahead of South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary Saturday, he’s deflecting attention brought on by ex-wife Marianne — and charges of veiled racism in his recent comments.

“I’m not going to get into a war of words with Marianne,” Gingrich said on TODAY Thursday of his second wife, who has reportedly sat for a two-hour interview with ABC News.
