Perspective: Tea Party Group Attempts To Change A Fact By Trying To Remove Slavery From Textbooks

It is stunning to see the degree some people will go to totally rewrite history because they really don’t like how it turned out. So, what is happening in Tennessee right now? You have some Tea Party groups in Tennessee, and what — you know what they — you know what they want to do? They actually want to literally remove slavery from textbooks. Some of them are saying, “Well, let’s augment it. Let’s actually show that some African-Americans owned slaves. It wasn’t just Whites [who] actually owned slaves.” And so they want to really change, or rewrite, history. What’s also crazy in this whole piece is they say, “Well” — they also are critical of people who criticize the Founding Fathers for having slaves — “These were honorable men.”

It’s a fact! Many of them owned slaves. So, therefore, how do you want to now change a fact?

We can’t be quiet when these things happen. We saw what happened in Texas when they — when conservatives began to change the laws in the books. If liberals tried, we’d go after them as well. [The] bottom line is don’t be silent and wait for it to be passed, and then you get upset. Challenge every change now and hold people accountable.

That’s my perspective. What is yours?

    My mom was a history professor. Her semester syllabus said two things: I do not teach feel good history, and the quote “those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it”. The truth is slavery was wrong regardless of whom ownership rested with. African Americans owned slaves. Seminole tribesman owned slaves. In reality their ownership numbers were so small that the history is irrelevant. Do these people think that somehow by reporting this fact that the ownership of slaves will be less diabolical? these are probably the same people that believe our founding fathers were christian men who wanted a christian nation. Pull your head out of your a– get out of the trailer park and go read some real history books.

       Also the ARABS enslaved Africans long before the Europeans knew who we were.
      I think about 1500 yrs – of course this was after our reigned of power in the NILE VALLEY was over & coming to an end.
      Don’t forget civilization started in AFRICA – AFRICAN people started civilization and they are still finding ancient human fossil in the rich soil for AFRICA.
      So whom enslaved whom is not as important to me as the beginning of civilization itself..

    Roland – I couldn’t agree with you more. Slavery is a part
    of American history; and needs to be told to the generations growing up.
    Unfortunately slavery will always be a negative blood stain on the fabric of
    America; but it is a story that tells the journey of America.

    The problem with all this FUSS – a lot of PARENTS don’t know our history.
    People!!!! stop thinking our history started with SLAVERY – i hate to inform you – but it didn’t.
    The fact that slavery is apart of our history doesn’t mean that it started there..
    WHO DO U THINK BUILT THE PYRAMIDS – I KNOW EUROPEANS WANT U TO THINK THEY DID BUT THEY DIDN’T – EUROPEANS WEREN’T AROUND AT THAT TIME IN HISTORY OR I SHOULD SAY THEY WEREN’T AN ORGANIZED SOCIETY…
