Roland Martin’s Statement Regarding The H&M David Beckham Super Bowl Ad

By Roland S. Martin
Editor-in-Chief
RolandMartinReports.com

Fam, let me address the issue that some in the LGBT community have raised regarding some of my Super Bowl tweets yesterday.

I made several cracks about soccer as I do all the time. I was not referring to sexuality directly or indirectly regarding the David Beckham ad, and I’m sorry folks took it otherwise.

It was meant to be a deliberately over the top and sarcastic crack about soccer; I do not advocate violence of any kind against anyone gay, or not. As anyone who follows me on Twitter knows, anytime soccer comes up during football season it’s another chance for me to take a playful shot at soccer, nothing more.

That’s it?  Please try again–preferably after your CNN bosses have a meeting with
you to explain the principles underpinning “hostile work environment” jurisprudence, and how your public comments–off-the-cuff and intended to be sarcastic, or not–affect the reputation of your employer. Did you take damage control lessons from Susan G. Komen VPs or are you really so ignorant?

You are a coward and the fact you think your wife thinks she gets gays to walk away from being gay is a joke. Maybe you can get away from being ignorant but I doubt you can be “cured” from being straight.

    • Brittany

Seriously get a life. If you had seen the tweet then you would have known it was not intended to offend anyone. Have a sense of humor, his record of defending those who have been insulted & bullied proves otherwise. Do a damn fact check!!

You also have to consider timing as well regarding his joke. There are so many other things to confront besides a person making a joke about an ad during super bowl. Many of us did the same thing he did last night as well. Stop being so “PC” and just take it for what it is…a joke. Sheeesh!!

So if your tweet was about soccer and not about gays, why did you single out “dudes” instead of saying “a person” or “someone”?  I’m not buying the apology.

    • Anonymous

I would assume because its a “Men’s” commercial.

      • Pstinard

My point was, I’m sure a lot of women liked the commercial too.  Why not threaten to beat them up too?  Anyway, I’ve read Roland’s latest apology and I accept it.  I’m sure Roland has learned from the experience and it’s time to move on.

That’s the crazy thing, Roland has made previous over the top jokes. Here’s one ”
Sisters, if your new man comes by & looks one of my nieces up & down, all the men are whuppin’ his azz. Got it? #Rolandscookoutrules”. He just advocated violence against heterosexual men!

Another one: “If we get 2 discussing politics & u say “Barack,” I’m bustin’ u in the head w/big mama’s cane. It’s Pres Obama #Rolandscookoutrules”.

More:”If you show up with your underwear showing, that ass we see will get whupped! #Rolandscookoutrules”

This one encourages racial profiling: “Bruhs, if you show up Timbalands & jeans, I’m patting you down. No one legal wears those hot azz clothes to a cookout #Rolandscookoutrules”

Father’s Day:”If u bought me some socks, let me put them on & then kick yo azz out the house. Socks? Socks?! Some damn socks?! #rolandsfatherdayrules”

Here’s one with #teamwhipdat***: “If you ask me to turn up the sound when the Super Bowl commercials come on, say hello to #teamwhipdatass Focus on the game! rolandsrules”

I post all that to demonstrate that Roland either advocates violence against everybody everywhere, or he makes over the top jokes, that may or may not be funny, and may or may not be offensive. I personally think it is the latter. If you believe he’s advocating violence against gays for the superbowl tweets, then you have to take all the others seriously too.

          • Pstinard

Stop it branq, you’re turning me into a Roland Martin fan now :-).  I hadn’t paid him much attention before.  His political commentary is actually pretty good…

whatever, Roland. It’s pretty hard to believe you, given your track record of outright homophobia.

I am unfamiliar with the act that you referred to in your tweet as “smack the ish out of him”.

Can you detail what “the ish” is and how, exactly, would one smack it out of someone?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Jayson

Very weak statement.  I don’t care if you were joking around or not.  Most people I have met who are extremely homophobic are “supposedly straight” black men.  Why is that???????

    • Brittany

No one has stated that when someone makes a statement to say sorry that it has to be weak or strong. It simply has to be made to the people that person “supposedly” offended. He did take the time to retract what he may have stated or to clear up what he meant. The question of whether or not his statement is weak or strong is a matter of personal perception. He amended his “wrong” and for that people should be mature enough to take it for face value.

Let’s leave sexuality issues aside for a moment, Roland: You’ve stated in previous writings that you’re a Christian.  Merely joking about violence…what’s Christ-like about that?  Would Jesus be a member of ‘TeamWhipDatAss’ ?

Your actions on Twitter fail on several levels, sir.

Ugh. People joke about violence all the time. If we fired everyone from their jobs who joked about violence, the numbers of unemployed Americans would increase exponentially.

And if we held Christians accountable for all the hypocritical stuff they said, half the country would probably be in trouble.

    Another apology without apologizing.

When I read anything that promotes violence against others because of who they are or what they wear I’m disgusted. And I do not watch people on TV who make such disgusting comments.

Parting thought: I wonder how Roland would have responded today if Rick Santorum had posted that Tweet yesterday.

Too little, too late. You should at least be honorable enough to make a true apology. Or to pay someone to write one, if you can’t.

    • José Luis Lugo

Why does he have to apologize to you? When was the last time you apologized to God? Start practicing before it is too late.

      • Check yourself.

When did God give you the authority and the right to go around dictating whether people need to apologize to God? Sure, everyone must recognize their own sin and iniquity before the almighty Lord, but that includes you as well. Get off your moral pedestal and recognize that you’re failing to follow Jesus’s commandment to love your fellow man.

        • Sbechtel

I’m sorry, but disagreeing with someone’s point of view is not being on a “moral” pedestal.  Oh, by the way, what was Jesus’s commandment?  To love your fellow man?  Yes, it is and by loving your fellow man, you tell them the truth – with love, not condemnation.  There really is an absolute truth – and there really is total forgiveness.  Thank God!  Sin is sin – no one sin greater than the other in the eyes of the Lord.

  • ISpeakOnlyTruth

It stuns me how someone of Roland Martin’s position acts as if he did nothing wrong.  No matter how you slice it, it came out and sounds as homophobic as it can be.

This comes from a man whose own race started the “DL” terminology because these closeted men were seeing other men on the side.  Ooops, l didn’t mean to call DL people closeted. They are just individuals who are leading a secondary life because they are afraid people like Roland Martin might call them out on the carpet.

perhaps when people are making extremely offensive jokes (such as, encouraging your parents to stab you for being who you are), or limiting your civil rights to marry or have equal employment protection in many states, THEN you can make it “all about you”

dear roland:  there is alot of power in forgiveness…it really CAN change peoples hearts and minds…but you would have to show signs that you understand what you have said MORE THAN ONCE feeds negative attitudes about gay people, violence against them and hatred of them. you have yet to take responsibility and show that you really give a sh*t. your mind and heart need to open for anything positive to come out of this for anyone. there ARE people deeply affected by this who are strong enough to  forgive you, if you are strong enough to look at the truth.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K7YII2BZ3BXEJHZQZZCX27JS2I RENELDA

The homosexual community, in my decades of association, are a most negative and confused group. And Mr. Martin should never have apologized. Although his so-called apology was more an explanation than an apology. But that wasn’t even necessary. Mr. Martin did absolutely nothing to warrant even a mild castigation from CNN. There is nothing sacrosanct about the homosexual community. And I KNOW THIS FOR SURE: HOMOSEXUALS LOATHE HETEROSEXUALS, COVERTLY OR OVERTLY. Believe me.
They are an angry and confused group.  There is absolutely NOTHING TO BE FORGIVEN BY MR. MARTIN. It is the homosexual community that needs to ask contritely for Mr.Martin’s forgiveness for the trouble they have caused. But they won’t; they are too hate-filled.

      • Z01011980

Renelda’s brilliant sweeping generalization is worth thinking through.  Why, I hear that all black people hate white people.  Or as Renelda would put it, “[Blacks] are an angry and confused group.”

Renelda, you are as bad as a racist and you don’t even understand why.

Never complain never explain. Or. I said it. I meant it. I’m here to represent it.  When Roland Martin’s tweet first went viral, I said if CNN fires him, he should fire his agent. The very first time I read his tweet I just giggled out loud. It was funny. I did not read anti-gay in Roland’s tweet.
I also said that if CNN fires Mr. Martin then CNN IS GAY. I stand by that.
I liken the homosexual community to a religious cult.  That is their choice. I, the general public,
don’t have to cotton to any of their principles or precepts. And I do not. I don’t have to like their cult.
And I don’t. But, then, I am not a politician who feels it his/her duty to pander to this cult in order to
increase my voting base. I do not have to be a hypocrite. Who are these cultists that they can’t be poked fun at, which Mr. Martin did not.  KNOW THIS: The Homosexual Community Is Not Sacrosanct, not by a LONGSHOT. Roland Martin should sue CNN for all they are worth.

Based on the united states constitution.and because of the first ammendent. we have a right to free speech and to say whatever we feel. Now, In most cases we will each have a different perception of what that person has said. No, one person ever thinks alike. However. This is really ridiculous that CNN is taking Roland Martin off the air. This is unfortunate and another tactic to silence him because is a very influential man. I read his comments and watched the commercial. And, his comments were not homophobic.  CNN is making a big mistake by removing him from the air.  This is our time to mobilize and send letters and emails disputing their decision to remove Roland. CNN really??? you know his comments were not derogatory or homophobic. Watch out Soledad you will be next to go.
