Victim In Anti-Gay Video Beating Speaks Out

Source: Moni Basu, CNN

Atlanta – The victim of a vicious beating by a gang of men shouting anti-gay slurs said Wednesday that he wants his attackers to face justice.

Brandon White, 20, spoke out for the first time at a news conference in Atlanta. He said he should never have to worry about being assaulted just because he is a gay man.

“If a straight person can walk to the store, I should be able to do the same thing,” he said. “I could have died that day. They are monsters.”
A video circulated online shows three men punching and kicking White after he stepped out of the JVC Grocery and Deli in southwest Atlanta’s Pittsburgh neighborhood.

I cannot believe CNN suspended you over a few stupid tweets that were completely blown out of proportion. Way to PC it CNN.

    • Ron Farmer 923

I can’t believe it either. CNN is over rated anyway it seems they turned Conservative anyway and this was another way to get rid of an Obama supporter. They dont have to worry about me watching any of there programs or news story again. MSNBC dont fail me Now!

  • Vls219

I just put CNN on notice about giving me the same treatment the G&L community has received if I am offended by anyone employed by them.  There are many ways I can take offense.  As a minority, poor person, single mother, Divorcee, Democrat and sometimes Republican so they know they better watch their step. I will probably boycott them now anyways, I have to follow Roland.

The tweet made sense to me and ladies lets not be fooled by CNN’s stance, if that happened in your house  you better check.

  • Gsands

Roland, I have always liked you and I do find your  (on tv cnn) comments to be insightful and resourseful. Your talent and special way of bringing out many truths will now be shut off. I hope you will open your own show and continue in some way to be a part of the mix in this country. Lots of talent is being wasted over tweeting and facebook and other sorts of social media.Everyone has a private area that should not be exposed on the media. Everyone has bias and faults keep your head high and go forward Roland. I do not believe for one second you were trying to insight gay bashing, but comments can be misconstrued by someone with tendency to act out toward gays or other people.

    • Ron Farmer 923

And CNN is one of the biggest Misconstruer there is next to Fox News. Fox just has the balls to openly admit there Republican and CNN hides there views!

  • Vistor

I cannot believe CNN suspended you over a few stupid tweets that were completely blown out of proportion. Way to PC it CNN.

  • Verrett1

Don’t you remember what color you are? Roland, racism is alive and well so watch your mouth. This is an election year and you are our mouthpiece during these volatile months. I love you.

  • judy

I’m as liberal as they come but CNN is really going to suck sometimes without you :(  Especially in the morning – you wake me up by making me laugh!  Hang in there.

  • Brenda

Just another way for CNN, to get another one who is not  ONE  of them… CNN is not UNBIASED news …..I can deal with out stupid bigotry, it is the UNDERCOVER ones you have to watch, oops not watch in this case.

  • Jeanie

I cannot believe they suspended you! You are one of the best commentators they have/had. CNN has consistently gone downhill…….I don’t know who is running the place, but maybe they should be suspended!

  • Akoto

I can not believe it.  I’m speechless.  I will not watch anymore. How dare they.  Who are the real homophobics?

  • Kountri

I am so sick and tired of race, religion, sexuality, education, wealthy, poor and gender sensitive folks acting a fool nothing! CNN get a freaking grip on life and Grow the Hell up!
Rowland, you know this is not about a Tweet! Move on because we are Tweeting right behind you…

    Caringly
    Kountri -  NW Houston

  • Lesweedman

I can believe it, you are a sleeze bag anyway, unemployment here you come

  • Kfar

    waaaaaaa!

  • Veronica Dean

Rowland I am sorry about what happend in regards to your comments, the rights of person to speak freely is  are getting way to serious.  People or groups are wearing comments on the sleve.  Your in the media and black thats all.  If a white person had said that — oh well an apologize would have been acceptable.  Now I do not have a heaven or hell to put GAYS in,  and quite frankly have gay friends, I don’t judge. But this went a little to far in suspending you !!!!  look to hear your response.

    DeanV- Charlotte, NC

    • Bajan6163

      Dean V,

I saw Rowland at GSU last year, and he had a great speech. Today I will tell him to say my name is not Toby. This is land of the free. What if the person in the ad was black, I am quite sure nothing would have been said, and most definitely if it was a white man he would have been slapped on the hand. Look at what they say about our President who is a black man. At least Rowland did not hide behind a false name when he tweeted. I wonder how many use anonymous names and tweet and blog. You can’t keep the blacks down forerver. In the words of Mya Angelou, AND STILL I RISE…………………. INFINITY

  • Francoismax

Please CNN we should expect more from you———–maybe we should boycott you instead
    Max Francois

  • Kiwi

I have never posted on a blog until this day. I read your tweet and I did NOT get a gay bashing remark out of it. Political correctness is getting out of hand. No one should police every word another says and just assume it has a negative connotation. Keep your head up and I look forward to hearing your response.

  • Africanwarrior

Well, the fact that every single entity in America, except African Americans will have a voice.  Lesbians, Gays and Transgendered folks will have more civil liberties than straight black people.  If you even remotely come close to addressing any issues about these Gaya ans Lesbians, you will have to deal with your own personal “Salem witch hunt.”  I am very offended as a black man when these individuals who god made as a man or a woman, try to link their sexual persuasion to civil rights, and the struggle that blacks have endured in America.  Roland, CNN just wanted to continue with a “White face, in the Right Place.”  CNN, means Can Never have a Nigga Network.

    • Jacques

Oh African Warrior, where should one begin with the incorrectness of your statement. Ill start with the simple. CNN only has 2 N’s therefor could not be Can Never have a Nigga Network. Not to mention all the other black anchors are getting quite a slight from you, did you forget that Don Lemon works there?

How does being ugly to homosexuals empower you? If you believe God is in charge, why are you on his role to pass judgement on someone?

The idea that Civil rights is a strictly African American struggle is myopic and short sighted. Women, Asian Americans, and other groups have struggled for their rights.

Also CNN does more stories related to the African American culture than any other network on TV, The death of Don Cornelius was just about wall to wall coverage on CNN, didn’t receive a wink of attention on other news networks, so exactly what are you complaining about?

The way I see it, you are homophobic, you are upset that someone you relate to lost their job over a homophobic insult and can’t admit that fact, so you go on blaming the man or other groups instead of being honest with yourself.

      • Bajan6163

        Jacques,

The last time I looked CNN is not doing blacks in this country a favor. They have maybe a total of 8-10 on air persons of color. It seems the only person who can state their view is on the rediculous list. I use to relate to some on CNN, now it seems that their network has taken on a different path. I do believe that many of the contributors do not like people of color. Do me a favor and take a look at some of their body language the next time you watch. As people we all have equal say, not just one group, and that is what the African Warrior is doing.

      • whocares

Why is he being ugly? O’ because he has a view that doesn’t coincide with your gay views? Why are you assuming that it empowers him? You sound quite ignorant actually. Just a man expressing his views from a suck a dick point a view…oops was i a bit too blunt? perhaps being uglier than Africanwarrior maybe? O’well…don’t care.

Your also saying that we need to be grateful to CNN because they do stories on African Americans whereas others do not! Really? O’ thank you gay mass-tah, thank you very much, I sho does appreciate ya. “tap dancing, shucking and jiving”…

Get the bleep outta here with this nonsense! Every darn show on television is white, white, white, white, white, wait there are 3 spanish channels, white, white, white, white, white, white, 2 black channels, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, one gay channel, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white, white…..Yet you sound as if Blacks need to feel something special from CNN, O’ please!

Be honest with yourself…Your overly sensitive because your gay and feel some need to justify it…Apparently you took the part out of the bible that says God will judge, but didn’t read the other pages, that said men do not lie with men…Your picking and choosing what you want the truth to be, instead of it being what it is. So yes I agree with you on one thing, God will judge!

  • Tony Aguilar

    Hey Roland,

I’m still a fan of yours and your opinions regarding really important issues us today. CNN seems to need to appear politically correct at all times or think they are. Slowly but surely CNN is losing it’s status as a news network and becoming a censored medium.

CNN has never defended it’s news anchors which reminds me now, why have all the departures/dismissals and suspensions lately been all mostly black male anchors?

I’ll miss your commentaries on CNN and I hope you find a new home to voice your opinion and thoughts that many of us share in kind. Keep your head up.

  • Alfred

Wow Roland, I was just waiting and wondering when and what tactics the majority was going to use to silence you – it appears that they have found one, even if it is nonsensical. CW

  • Marisa

Roland, i regret what has happened to you regarding your suspension. How can one organization speak for all of America.  I am considering starting a movement to get you back on CNN. We as citizens are now losing our right to not only freedom of speech, but freedom of Tweet. I hope to see you back on CNN. You are a valuable asset and I want others to advocate on your behalf.

  • Bajan6163

    Francoismax,

I agree with you on the boycott, when I watch the political contributions I often get the feeling I am watching Fox News. What happen to free speech. CNN has gone down hill, I use to watch a whole lot, now I watch very little.

  • Jacques

The only thing that saddens me about this situation, is that Roland, an outstanding journalist, results to the same cheap cover up that he has reported on so many times. Do you really think the public will not be able understand the meaning in your tweet? Look you said something slightly homophobic, I’m sure you’ve had someone say something slightly racist and you were able to move past it.

But a complete denial and acting like the slight was at soccer? Come on, next you are going to tell us Larry Craig really does have a wide stance and Anthony Wiener didn’t send those pictures?

You should know the cover up lie often makes things worse.

    • whocares

Come the Bleep Bleep on…Really? Like I’m so sick of hearing about Gay this Gay that, I don’t give a craps behind if u like it in the butthole or like to lick twat..Who cares, I don’t go around expressing wants and needs just because I am a woman who loves men, like get over this crap and move on to something real, instead of worrying about what gender you love to bone!
America is so immoral and has lost all sense of virtue, next thing you know, there will be a group wanting rights because they want to get it on with animals….uuugh…This gay stuff shouldn’t even be a real thought…

This guy who got beat up, it was wrong and the men who beat him should be punished, not because this man likes buttholes, but because hitting and hurting people is wrong, point blank end of discussion.

Yes, he should have known better, don’t we all, yet we all make mistakes…..O’ well such is life….Roland made a mis-step in sending the twitter message, it was a personal sentiment, expressing his views and he probably had a drink or two sitting at home watching the super bowl… O’ well, get over it! Everyone has said at one point or another they would smack the ish out of someone, be it in jest or what have you, the point is you really wouldnt do it.  He wasn’t saying it to incite violence, and anyone who can read with logical sense, could see the tone…get over it, move on to something a bit more real than this crap.

Lawwd I am so sick and tired of being sensitive to these overly sensitive “gay people” Get the F over yourselves! Keep your sexual crap to yourself!

  • Africanwarrior

There’s a time coming soon, when CNN will give “Jerry Sandusky”more civil Liberties than straight hard working African Americans.  CNN- Can Never Higher and Keep a Nigga Network.

  • Sclevelnd

Still have great love for a fellow texan ! Will continue to support you every sunday on washington watch.  You’ll will get by this.

  • Janet

Roland, what you did was just plain dumb & totally homophobic!! You are so much better & smarter than that… AND, we need(ed) you & your input on CNN… now more than ever! You’ve let a LOT of us down, my brother.  Man-up, & apologize without the BS nonsense excuses. And stop “tweeting” when & while you’ve been drinking!

    • Bajan6163

      Janet,

You need to get off the drink

  • Daniel

So what soccer does suck.  Some of you need to get a life.

  • Stephon Walker87

It saddens me that Roland Martin’s name is being run in the mud because of his personal preferences in sports. Also how we as people quickly forget how racist and bias a entire network (Fox) is and lastly the fact that he lost his job over comments is just crazy  when Don Imas made multiple racist comments in his career and up until recently he was praised as a sports reporter

  • Gaz Jones

Roland, my oldest daughter is gay..and your comment was quite harmless (but, apparently, uber politically incorrect)…

    Oh, but…

Roland, my wife (25 years) is Black American and we worked on Obama’s 2008 campaign and now feel completely betrayed by yet another politician who’s an international banker’s puppet…

    So,

Roland, please cease and desist from being an uncritical apologist for Obama.

  • Loveable0024u

come on that was not offensive maybe you all should stop being touchey oh that offensive to huh

  • Lovable0024u

I am through watching CNN I thought they was better than that and I do not watch FOX you kidding me you going to tell me that a reason for a human being to lose their job. That is bull……

  • John Dawes

Publicly encouraging violence against gays is unacceptable. Some bigots have to learn the hard way. You suck.

    • Sam Angil

      SOCCER:  AMERICA’S FAG SPORT.

Utah built a new soccer stadiun.  First time my wife and I went, when we were walking back to our car, we had to scrape the condoms off the bottom of our shoes..God what a SICK sport to be played in AMERICA..Leave that sheit for all the foreigners.

      • LUCIA

Soccer is FOOTBALL….There is quite some technics required. Watching the american football, I should give it a different name: HANDBALL…….

    • Kydad

      No need to SHOUT!!!

    • Sbechtel

Unfortunately, those that have no true value in what they say, have to shout.  Those that have no truth, also have to resort to name calling.  Finally, those with no intelligence,  verbal skills, or facts, have to use profanity.  Clean up the language, learn the truth with no agenda, learn how to communicate – then maybe you will be listened to, as opposed to just being heard.  There is a difference. Oh- am I now being “intolerant”? :-O

  • SU PADRE

AS A DIE HARD FOOTBALL (soccer) FAN I REALLY DON’T GIVE A SHIT WHAT ANYBODY SAYS ABOUT THE BILLIONS OF FANS OF THE GREATEST BIGGEST MOST EXCITING SPORT IN THE WORLD! (If that really is what you meant.) Plus, It’s Beckham, he hasn’t been relevant in Football for about five years now.

  • Juliusfarrar

This is really BS. Hard to believe this could happen.
I have seen CNN drift toward conservative ideals, and report accordingly.
They used to be unbiased, but has slowly changed since Lou Dobbs
was there. All the females wind up saying the same things, not news anymore.

  • Steve Cooger

One less bully bigot advocating violence toward gays. Back to anonymity, loser.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Frederick-Katz/100000637800426 Frederick Katz

Roland has alway been a smart ass.  Believing his opion is the right opinion.
    Glad his off.

    • Bahagos

Have you talk to him? Do you know him personally?  He provide comment based on what was presented to him. Saying he believes his opinion is right is like you are in his brain all the time. If you have other issues about this man who is smart and full of energy, say it. you don’t have to cover your hate by writing this types of rude comment.

  • Dbelcher

I NEVER LIKED ROLLAND. HE IS A RACIST AND BIAS IN HIS REPORTING.  I’M GLAD TO SEE HIM GO.

    • Bahagos

You may be racist yourself calling him racist. He is one smart and direct man. You are a hater.

      • Skydad

Wow – you are a tool.  If you cannot see him as a biased racist in his reporting than you also think Hanity is a moderate.  Too funny.

    • Bahagos

Name one thing or comment he mad you believe was bias? Making up stories to try to destroy this man’s reputation is very sick.

  • Mary Knowlton

Can’t blame The Man for your own stupidity. Roland got smackd instead. Nothing worse than a minority hating on a minority. Shame on you, you unemployed fool.

    • Sbechtel78

Whose the minority?  People with poor taste?

      • Jacques

You are really going to try and say that he was making fun of the advertising department, when even he has said he was making fun of soccer.

Although he also made a joke about a player wearing pink during the pregame announcement. So again explain that?

  • Dblaw9898

American and the world needs Roland Martin back on the air.

  • Woodsey138

I thought that the beauty of America was that you can say what ever you want and if nobody likes it too bad! You go hosed brother.

    • C2bugs

It is truly as sad day in America when it comes down to almost EVER kind of group taking personal offense to someone’s off the cuff comment.  Our rights to free speech are gone forever.  I don’t care who this guy was; I never watched him, Government and light speed media has taken down a big part of the First Amendment.  God Help Us All.

      • Jacques

No the truly sad thing is unintelligent uninformed people like you that don’t even understand the bill of rights and understand what freedom of speech means. It does not give you the right to say what you want without consequence, it means the government will not censor your speech.

Please explain how CNN a private company is the government?

The sad thing is you don’t even understand the constitution which you are poorly using to defend Roland.

    • Gregory Waring

One’s right to free speech does not include inciting violence. Telling people to smack gays is not protected speech. Hate speech is not enshrined in the constitution. Bigots are so dumb.

      • Sbechtel78

Where did he say “smack gays”?  I thought he was talking about anyone whose taste was so poor that they thought the ad was good.  Thus, he must have been talking about the advertising department.

        • Jacques

yes and Larry Craig really has a wide stance when he goes into bathroom stalls.

  • Finley60453

Roland Martin is out at CNN.

    • MJ06

Stop cherry picking from the word to make yourself sound prophetic.  You bringing this tweet up is not about glorifying God in any way. Its an “I” told you so not God told you so.  You have no inkling of that man’s level of faith nor is it your duty to judge.  WOE?  Says you. You have no idea what the Lord has in place for him.

  • Bevy

CNN was just waiting for any opportunity to get rid of Roland Martin. So sick of everyone having to  appologize  because GLAD accuses them of saying something offensive about gays. I have always being opened minded about Gay rights and ready to vote in support of their cause but forget it now!!!

  • Ktbrules

I can’t believe they would fire you over someyhing so trivial. What happened to free speech and a sense of humor. The ad was disgusting anyway. Why isn;t that being discussed??

    • Jacques

How was the ad disgusting? I can see you saying that you didn’t like it, but disgusting? pretty harsh words, do you feel the same about victoria secret commercials?

Freedom of speech is no applicable here, it is freedom from government censorship, not losing your job because you said something offensive. You should re-read the constitution.

  • Dlovehouston

    Dear David
Just because your black does not me an you can act like a N—–!!!!! Think about it fool.

  • Pyro

Even though you are clearly trying to cover your homophobic comments by saying they were actually directed at soccer fans, the last thing soccer fans need in this country is one more ignorant fool making baseless anti-soccer jokes which are as stale as when they come out of Jim Rome’s mouth or any other American sports writer over 50.  Then again, you do have your finger on America’s pulse…how else do we explain The Ascot.

  • Skydad

He is a total tool and glad to see him get booted from CNN.  Although it is clear CNN is more liberal than FOX this guy was so biased that one could never believe a word he said – similar to Hanity.  See ya clown.

  • SERMAN05

“If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad,” he wrote, “smack the ish out of him!” How does this state anything gay? Nothing in Martin’s tweet directly or indirectly says anything about gays. If he had said “slap the guy at the Super Bowl party for acting gay while watching David Beckham’s commercial” then that’s different. But he didn’t. Martin has freedom of speech via television or social media just like everyone else. GLADD is wrong for always blowing things too far out of proportion so that the they can be in the lime light. Why would they want to bring negative attention to themselves in this way. Oh wait, did I just assume that’s what they meant to do? Well if is what I thought they meant then I must be right…right? Think about that!

    • Jacques

He also said nothing about soccer. So to understand what he said one must read between the lines, even given his flimsy explanation.

So if its not explicit then its not offensive? What about those kids who made monkey noises at the black basketball team? There was nothing racial insensitive said, they just make monkey noises whenever their team plays, they had no idea someone could take that as offensive.

    • Jacques

Also freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences, especially from a private company, no one has the freedom to say what they want without the possibility of consequences, you don’t believe me go say something vile to your bosses or bosses spouse or partner.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sheila-Elhilaly/100000450639549 Sheila Elhilaly

  • Eloren9922

Roland Martin is now an afterthought.  OTOH, he already was.

  • Scharloff

Roland Martin is a huge asset to CNN.  I believe him when he says he had not intended to
target the Gay community.  I think we have all become way overly sensitive when it comes to
Gay Rights.  I say live and let live…to each his own and I am certain Mr. Martin feels the same.
I hope you will not suspend Roland Martin permanently.  I for one pay close attention when
he speaks.  Please bring Roland Martin back!

    • Vjfariello

I get the huge part, but an asset? He’s clearly lying about his remarks not being aimed at gays. Seriously now, is there a fifth grader who wouldn’t understands what he meant. I’m glad you say you listen to Roland when he speaks. So do thousands. And when he sends a strong, intentional message that says “it’s not cool to be gay and if you know someone that is, beat them up”, that leads to what is being shown in the video on this page.

      • rainbowflag12

How do you know what he was thinking? Can you read minds? To call someone a liar is a serious matter. When you send a strong intentional message that you will bully and attack anyone who disagrees with you, any first grader would understand what you mean. Since you have responded to so many of these posts, are you employed by GLAAD to do so?

  • Jennifermappel

Freedom of press, freedom of speech!!
We are all God’s people, wake up America!!

    • Tracey

He can keep tweeting but CNN has the right to decide who they hire, keep or fire.

  • Cynthia

GLAAD is welcome to say anything in defense of their lifestyle, but anyone against that lifestyle is not welcome in a public forum. CNN is off my radar after 20+ years. And CNN does not listen nor does it accept Martin’s explanation. How much more slanted can you get!!?

    • Droovie

No, people like Roland are welcome in a public forum.  He has this blog, and it is certainly a public forum.  If you don’t like CNN’s decision, don’t watch.  Maybe he will move to Fox News and you can watch him on that public forum.

I had always respected Roland’s support of the President.  It’s too bad he’s homophobic, but there are plenty of people who don’t care about that, just like there are plenty of racists out there who don’t think Roland should be on TV at all because he is African-American.

  • Sbechtel78

    What happened to “tolerance”?

  • Vjfariello

Well Roland,it’s great to see that you understand the consequences of homophobic remarks by posting the video about anti-gay violence, but do you also understand thats why you’re in hot water? People like you, with a soap box (or tweeter account) reach many thousands of people and when you make public homophobic remarks on a medium like twitter, its being seen by some who say :hey, cool, Roland is anti-gay too, It gives credibility to an unacceptable thought. Can you see that Roland?

    • TraceyC

I am am normally all over someone for anti-gay comments but this time it just doesn’t fit. You can’t clown a dude for his man-crush on a soccer player at a superbowl party?

    • rainbowflag12

Well Vjfariello, you don’t seem to understand the consequences of your very public vitriolic remarks. People like you who carry their feelings on their sleeves and are just looking to attack someone, give the gay community a bad reputation. It’s being seen by some who say, hey, these gays are just bigoted fanatics and gives credibility to the thought. Can you see that Vjfariello? Gays just have a certain sexual preference and are otherwise the same as everyone else.

  • U_rmyfriend

Roland, Can’t believe this is happening to you. You are (in my opinion) one of the most well read and unbiased political commentators on the CNN network and I always looked forward to hearing your view point. How is it that just because you once again chose to be honest and open about your opinion and with your remarks, CNN has chosen to submit to what amounts to the minority voices of America. I’m shocked and stunned. I support you and trust that at some point in the not too distant future, CNN will realize that they have lost a great political voice and will invite you back as a keynote political contributor. CNN – Shame on you. This country was built on the principle of majority rule and freedom of speech even if it’s not whateveryone wants to hear. Just because we are in the public eye shouldn’t mean that we must give in to minority pressure just to keep the viewership. Where are your principles of standing up for what you believe in or have you just shown your true colors?

  • Vjfariello

And Roland, if your remarks weren’t meant to be directed at gays (they clearly were), then why post the video about anti-gay violence? Isn’t that an obvious admission that you need to counter your tweeter remarks?

    • rainbowflag12

Wow Vjfariello, it probably has more to do with the fact that he was subjected to a vicious attack accusing him of being antigay. So vicious that his employer was frightened into releasing him. So he was just defending himself and letting everyone know that he isn’t antigay. What is clear and obvious is that you are still in attack mode even though the guy has apologized for the misunderstanding. If you are trying to defend the gay community, Vjfariello, this is a big FAIL on your part because it is overkill. It gives people the idea that they should stereotype gays as intolerant and bigoted when, as a group, they aren’t that way any more than anyone else. Can you see that Vjfariello?

  • Vjfariello

Wow, just noticed your tagline of “Curator of Culture and Lifestyle.” Big FAIL on that Roland!

  • Ddmehta

Not a big fan of Roland Martin, however at the same time, whatever happened to freedom of speech??  Why be so sensitive to a simple comment, I don’t think it had anything to do with being against gay and lesbian community, this is wrong!!

    • Droovie

Nothing happened to freedom of speech.  He was and still is free to say stupid things.  Don’t confuse freedom of speech with prudence of speech.

  • Rhona

SMH …..what IZ the BIG DEAL?  If the powers that be wanted to get rid of Roland they could have just fired him without all this jive about it’s being done because of this comment….REALLY?  Boy oh boy…..

  • Annoyed!!

As much as I have alway enjoyed CNN, they can go to Hell! Now who’s gonna fire me for that!! I agree with the other person that said they were just looking for a reason to get rid of Roland. Funny when these white folks make disparaging remarks about minorities, the issue of termination lingers on debate and “careful consideration,” then apologies…then they still have their jobs. But the minute a minority makes a statement, he’s severely dealt with. Heck, we can’t even talk about dogs in a negative way or PETA will come after us. But I don’t see PETA when monkeys are compared to the President. People make me sick!!! This is the dumbest mess I heard! GLAAD is too busy trying to pull rank and make the whole world rainbow.

  • Finn Rockford

Gay-bashing comment aside, Roland is too fat for TV. More Don Lemon!

  • Mktmastermind

If I was in the room with a dude who got excited about the ad….”SLAP” is the action. Gay people are way too sensitive. In agreeance….why is it that white news people don’t have the same action taking against them when it comes to speaking negative about minorities? Pick & choose your battles but the fight against social and racial descrimination will ALWAYS EXIST. Keep speaking your mind, make jokes of the situation and don’t try to be socially excepted by all. I will follow Roland where ever he goes. I really don’t watch CNN anyway, I keep up with Mr Martin on the TMJS Show & the internet.

  • DAMIAN

WE HAVE TO BE SO CAREFUL NOWADAYS WITH OUR CHOICE OF WORDS WHEN WE ARE BLACK AND THE OTHER PERSON IS WHITE….ITS AMAZING HOW QUICK CNN WAS QUICK TO SUSPEND YOU BECAUSE THE ANTI GAY ORGANIZATION CRIED BLOODY MURDER

  • o_O

NOT a fan of CNN for stupid reasons as such. What I say outside of my work is my business. Muslims or non-christian people don’t protest me because I’m a Christian when I do business with them.

  • RashadLhouston

Roland said nothing about gay people in his tweet. If gays are offended then their not really proud of themselves. Trying to destroy roland career will not solve anything. It would just cause more people to talk badly about the gay community.

    • Jacques

So the equivalent is if during an commercial someone starts making monkey calls at an african american, its ok because they didn’t mention the group by name?

  • speaktruth

And this is why the conservative side is so strong. We minorities and those that call themselves a minority snipe at each others heels while the other side gather strength and influence. It would have been better to have Roland explain himself on a program dedicated to anti-gay bigotry and have him there as a voice to remind those out there that every action will have a re-action. To silence his voice is just counter productive. The other side would never do that.

  • Droovie

I think we should all read Roland’s own response. He admits to his error, and I respect him for it:

“As someone who has spoken out forcefully against bigotry against African Americans and other minorities, as well as sexism against women, I fully understand how a group who has been unfairly treated would be offended by such comments….”

  • Carr_family7

i think roland is a victim of homos trying to force normal people to accept them as normal.there is nothing normal about being gay. god made man and women. not man and man.or women and women.its time normal people took a stand and call it for what it is. its sick.and abnormal for q man to have sex with another man.

    • Z01011980

Just replace the words “homos” and “gay” with “negro” and it sounds just like 50 short years ago in this country.  I pray for your hatred to be freed.

      • Esdanny

don’t know how to reply to you, but I ain’t sure if your right or wrong, the only thing I tell you is I’ll think about it cause I think it’s weird but possibly right. S— I don’t know but it’s cool, I only know my  faith might figure this out cause I can’t. Danny

      • J.R. Smith

Wow, actually trying to tie in slavery of the blacks to homosexuality. One is a result of being born with a skin color..the other…a result of influence, but not birth. That’s sad that the homosexual community is doing their best to legitimize their activity…if they get enough people to believe they are born that way, it makes them feel better about their lifestyle. But here’s the thing…explain homosexuality. Since we know that God didn’t create them man and man or woman and woman, then it doesn’t fit in with Christianity, nor Islam or other world religions. And it doesn’t fit with evolutionary thinking either…the survival of the fittest. In order to continue producing a stronger, better species in order to advance the species, it has to better itself and since homosexuals can’t reproduce, they can’t pass their DNA to their off spring…there is no offspring. Explain how two heterosexual couples produce a homosexual child..it doesn’t happen because it doesn’t apply to both creationisim nor evolution. The only other explaination is influence. The problem with that is that those that are struggeling with abuse or any kind are hurting and they are looking for acceptance and it seems the homosexual message is one of acceptance in order to advance their cause. This is of course my opinion but one that millions of Americans and others worldwide hold to. No one should be discriminated against from having a job or other benefits but to give them for the shear sake of having a homosexual preference is bullying from the homosexual groups. Sad…very sad.

        • Jacques

By your uninformed view of evolution, all bees should be able to reproduce, as well as all ants, yet that is not the case.

Please retake elementary biology or stick to biblical references where you can hide behind a cloak of ignorance.

  • themanderin

my word, who CARES? these people and their bandwagons – live and let live already. you don’t like what he said, don’t subscribe to his twitter or listen to his telecasts, whatever. he shouldn’t have a job? he can’t make jokes or just speak his mind. down with the censorship already, that horse has been beat to death!!

  • Seronsa

roland has too remember no matter how high he gets up the media latter someone is always looking, even though we cant over look the good he has done (for CNN) as well as the people…. but what about immus or Marv Albert…. their cases came and went.So now what

  • Anonymous

while I am not a fan of Roland… I think it is ridiculous he got fired because of this… so tired of groups being bullies and demanding their way… and then getting it… CNN should not bow to the pressure of bullies and fire Roland for this… it is just not right…

    • Z01011980

Yes, I was just at my job today advocating violence against a particular group, and my employer had absolutely no problem with it.

      • rainbowflag12

Wow Z01011980, what was the group? Al-Qaeda? Terrorists? Child molesters? But wait, did Roland really clearly advocate violence against a specific group that he named? Or was that just your interpretation?
Aaron Beck, M.D., a world-renowned psychiatrist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, wrote a book: “Prisoners of Hate, The Cognitive Basis of Anger, Hostility, and Violence”. Sounds like you and Vjfariello ought to pick up a copy and take a look at it. It’s a great read.

  • Bigdoggrr

Its seems to be a trend, say something on your own time, that does not CLEARLY demonstrate gay bashing. You lose your your job because GLAAD calls for it. Then they want you to publicly (kiss their rear) lets work together for a common goal. FOR WHAT COMMON GOAL?! There are much simpler ways to handle a situation like this. CNNs knee jerk reaction is idiotic to say the least. This PC crap on people not on the gay bandwagon (ie..Gay marriage),  but will never promote discrimination towards gays…….NOW WILL I LOSE MY JOB FOR THAT COMMENT GLAAD?

  • Seronsa

Wow is CNN this weak & gives end ,fires Roland like this . I had respect for the network because they reported what the locals left out. Now rolands commits lead too this. He apoligized & again i say what about immus , Marv Albert, or the shock jock in New York for that matter.

  • Keeper…

Ok, this is going to far……a gay person has a right to say whatever…….amazing. I would Bitzzch slap a dude for getting excited at draws on a dude in my home……..Roland go to MSNBC ….they actually want black people there……..

  • Soccer humor, indeed

For a brilliant man, and one whose people have suffered 400 years of unfounded castigations, insinuations, degradations, merely because of skin color– skin color! — your ongoing comments impugning others merely because of their sexual preference– sexual preference!– is as offensive, and sadly puerile, as your attemot to pass it all off as “soccer humor.” Your superficial sense of the value of other people’s struggle demeans the struggle of your own.

    You embarrass me, sir.

  • Esdanny

Sorry Guys’ but he’s really very, very smart, and I’m sure a very good kiss a–, but you guys said who  did the dirty work i.e. moni basu. Maybe you should let girl or guy that’s does the “dirty work) on camera instead of some guy sitting around waiting for someone else to do his job and kissing a– or whatever. I got a “manager” that’s right up there with you guys. Damn can’t fire her, nobody wants her as she’s the most used of equipment in the store, think about it your just as screwed as I am

  • Georgefilchak1942

I believe CNN has made a bad decesion regarding your suspension.I enjoy your honest style, and proffesional attitude.

  • Brian

Man you did nothing wrong the LGBT community needs to put a sox in it. People are always looking for an excuse to promote there cause, at the expense of someone who they feel has done them wrong. Please, you should loose your job because of some tweets. What a joke. But this also shows what is wrong with people today, man next time just watch the game and can the tweets.

  • Bluebird253

Forget what he says in a Twitt. I want to know if his hands are placed together in his bio photo to form the shape of a triangle or pyramid, the international symbol of Freemasonry. My bet is that it is. If this guy is a Freemason, then screw him and his alleged faith. He would be a liar and a deceiver. Just like Obama, who is a Freemason, both Bushs who are Freemasons, Clinton, Reagan, etc etc…….

  • Nina

I just want to extend my support to Roland and to say that I truely believe his comments on David Beckems commercial had no anti guy sentiments.Hope to see him back on CNN soon. Your opinion matters in this upcoming elections. Lately all the black commentators seem to just disappear from CNN. I wonder why this is happening now??? Could this be more of a political move? I wonder….

  • Africanwarrior

Soledad O’Brien is next.  She’s to close to African Americans, garnering all those black awards and attending all those Black award events, like the NAACP, Soul Train and Essence award shows.  Remember, black folks, white people don’t care “If you’re talking, just as long as no one is listening.”  We don’t have the “Complexion” for “Affection” at CNN.  The only thing that has saved Don Lemon’s job at CNN, is the fact that he’s gay.  If they wanted to get rid of him because he’s black, even though he’s a good journalist, they would have to fight the gay lobby.  White America always will change the rules, therefore only allowing us that “Illusion of Inclusion.”   Right now African Americans have been disparaged by every single Republican in the race for President of the United States.  Nonetheless, “Why can’t we all get along.”  The hypocrisy of the white elite establishment in America is nauseating, and the corporate “Plantation Owners” at places like CNN, MSNBC and these other networks, offer us the true manifestations that America is still the last bastion of chatel slavery on this planet.

    • RJofDC

Good Night Irene.  Why does it always have to be that the Black Man has been wronged.    Do you think Mr. Martin’s suspension could have had anything to do with his own actions vs the color of his skin?  And not just this single incident, but over time and that this most recent faux pas was the cherry on the cake?

  • Vanleonardo

Im gay and Im tired that political correctness is used for everything nowadays, making us afraid of even joke about daily things like a super bowl commercial. I am sure Roland Martins comments came from the sponaneity of the moment. Its true that we are defending our rights in society but we are becoming ourselves the bullies. Let the straights be funny too!

  • rehab_counsel

Glad you are out of CNN. You are a stupid commentator that says nothing of substance but think you are smarter than your viewers.
Go find a real job. I am sure you need to lose a lot of grease to get a real job.
On the other hand, better keep eating  Humpty Dumpty till you cant fit through the doors

    • david hogan

maybe the greatest post in the history of the internet….

    • Andersp

      He has one honey

  • Hollandenv

    Roland:
Since the majority of your time on CNN has been spent praising Barack Obama and getting him reelected, I am sure you can get a job on his campaign staff and enjoy the Chicago Mafia way of life. It seems to fit you well. Good Luck!

    • david hogan

      Great post…

    • http://twitter.com/nanton29 nanton james

Rush Limbaugh says offensive things all the time, Mark Levy recently said  ‘the president should stop monkeying around’ they are still on the air. I guess it is because they are not black.

  • Pegg23

Roland here is your chance to be on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). You and her would make a great team! Tell her to give you your own show. I would watch.

    • david hogan

youre the ONLY one that would watch

    • RJofDC

       Oprah won’t have him.

  • easy

I don’t see any  correlation in his remark about gays or lesbians. I don’t see it.
My take on it is if your at a Superbowl party, and someone starts goin on about that soccer player in his underwear, to razz him. Kinda like the Miller Lite commercials.
Really people, calm down. Being politically correct all the time can take the fun out of life.
I know someone will accuse me of being insensitive or some such thing.  Get over it.
I don’t think Roland should have been suspended. It seems to me that CNN used this as an excuse to get rid of him. He’s a smart man.  Not many could go up against him on CNN and win.
     this is all bulls!t

  • Matt Shank

    Mr. Martin,

I don’t always agree with comments from the left, but I surely don’t agree with CNN letting you go over your Superbowl commercial comment.  You have right under the Constitution and they have been violated!  Move on over to Fox News. Jaun Williams does it and he hangs out on the left all the time.  Good luck to you sir.

    Matt Shank.

  • Cloraone

I think CNN took this opportunity to get rid of Roland.  They too find it hard to deal with strong, outspoken intelligent African American Men.  Just look at their Anchors (both male and female).  It is hard to believe that there are not more qualified African American males and females for achoring positions on CNN.  Whites have been forgiven for worse and are still on the air.  This is just another incident where whites can say anything they want to defame the President and any other African American and we get fired for having an opinion about white America, especially those they hold in high esteem.  To set the record straight, I enjoy Lesbians, Gays and any other person God has put on this earth.  We all have the right to share this planet.  Still African Americans, i.e. President Obama are defamed and cursed in some manner daily by the whites who are guest on news shows and there is not enough outrage to eliminate their smug and idiotic dialogue. Go Roland, I believe your comments were benign by todays standards of comments that are tolerated by the news media and that CNN should continue your employment.  However, since  it is clear they do not want you, it is best to move on and take this as a learning experience.

    • Andersp

I agree 100%  I have been looking for this to happen for quite sometime  This man tells if like it is and they (white america) can’t stand it  He will survive  It is cnns lost

  • david hogan

I’m glad you lost your job.

  • Mlucado Cityofrefuge

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Rolands comment.  As a matter of fact I remember a day when it was just the opposite if you were gay.  He shouldn’t be ostracized because he doesn’t agree with the homosexual agenda.  America and Americans need to wise up and stop promoting homosexuality via acceptability.  -We love the sinners but not the sin!  Amen

    • David

Moron.  You are the sinner here and incapable of love.

  • Tyrone304

I think it shame for CNN to suspends Roland Martin.

  • Realist

It amazes me…what issues get to be mainstream in the media and on cable (news). I am for all gay rights and  gay marriage, everyone has the right to be happy and share their lives with whom they love. It would be amazing if people fought for the rights of all americans, instead of certain groups, at certain media inflamed times. At one tine, I favored CNN over most  other cable news networks. During the time President Obama was running for the office, CNN was the  most fair and balanced, TRULY giving both sides to the topic and giving the  viewer the choice of having an informed opinion. When it became apparent Barack Obama was going to be president…it changed. Since then, I have now noticed CNN is becoming FOX 2, with minimal fair coverage of democratic views, and that doesn’t mean having a panel of 4 to 5 republicans and 1 democrat as even. I hear more negative coverage than good, especially when there is good to be told. If Mr. Martin comments are so offensive to CNN, they should more closely monitor ALL offensive comme nts. Currently the republican presidential canidates have called President Obama…the  food stamp president, muslim, hitler nazi, communist, tar baby…Tancredo  just yesterday compared him to his dog. I just believe that coverage of good and bad, truth and lie be covered evenly. CNN had Mr. Martin, now he’s gone…Soledad O,Brien will probably be next to be terminated, the 2 most known on CNN for being fair and minority friendly. Fox spreads a message of hate and discontent, most are racially, homophobic and women’s right based, but it appears you can’t call racism what it is, unless it’s the republicans using the term. For our country to be so amazing, it saddens me to see Americans Hating Americans…due to, race, color, gender, sexual preference, economic place, ethicnicity, age, the young, who you can love, where you can live, whether you deserve medical coverage to live, abortion and etc.. Certain religous, pro-life politicians will find millions to attack and kill other people…but giving medical coverage to AMERICANS who are in need, who have paid for it….well that’s just TOO much. I don’t see any of our congress or senate reps, giving up the health care they have, WE pay for!

  • Doccuba

Roland you are a bigot and a joke

  • Andersp

I have always enjoyed  cnn but I think that all of my fellow watchers should rethink looking at this station and maybe not give thim the support and ratings  They have lost a true person that spoke his mind like we all should do  he did nothing wrong  they just never liked his honesty he has my support  cnn it is your lost  watch your rating go down fast  he will be a true treasure to some where else

  • MaximusA

Wow, I can see why some folks may find it offensive. However, I know Rowland knows better than that. He is not stupid to deliberately hurt anyone; especially on air. I think CNN is under pressure and they had to do something about it, but let’s not forget all of us are hurting in some way or another. He apologized for what he said, I hope CNN would reconsider & put him back on air soon. What happen to forgiveness? Don’t you all remember what happened to Blacks being segregated, stereotyped, brutally beaten and murdered and so forth. This country will never heal, if we keep going like this. I still feel like I cannot be as open and liberated as a White person does (I cannot mess up or make a mistake). I still fear that we will never be equal because we do not challenge our hearts and soul to face the ugly truths and admit that we need to change. If we did, we would not treat President Obama the way some of us did. Think about it!

  • Graham Parker

Listen to all the homophobes crying racism. Too funny.

    • rainbowflag12

Could also say: listen to all the heterosexphobes crying homophobia. Not a laughing matter. Psychiatrists might say they have “reaction formation”. Have any skeletons in your closet Graham?

  • Angel

Am amazed at all the homosexual that are out bashing Roland Martin. Hey, this is the one time when gay people come out the closet and give their opinion……..lol. Here food for thought, if being gay was so god give right, why did Roland his job over a state. ‘Really’ being a F@@@ or a lesiban is so right……..lolol. OOOOO yea, I guess being gay really isn’t right….opps did I say something………..wowowoh……lolol……omg…….. I think of of you’ll need to be concern with your HIV test then what a guy says on Twitter……..lolol………..

  • Anonymous

This all boils down to RACISM!!!  Point blank!  What about these “white dudes” out he   re,, they can say whatever they want, get a little slap……no tap on the wrist, get a PAID VACATION, which they actually attempt to call a suspension, and before you know it…..they are back on the air bright eyed and bushy tailed!!!  Hey Roland, why don’t you check out the OWN network, I am sure you wouldn’t have to worry about being treated FAIRLY!!
