This week’s winner of The Biggest Damn Lie is Mitt Romney.
Mitt Romney, who has a law and business degree from Harvard, was governor of Massachusetts for four years. He isn’t very familiar with which parts of governments do what.
Romney stated in an interview with FOX news that the federal government doesn’t pay for teachers, firefighters or policemen.
MR. MARTIN: Mitt Romney, who has a law and business degree from Harvard, was governor of Massachusetts for four years. He isn’t very familiar with which parts of governments do what. Listen to what he had to say to Brian Kilmeade of Fox News.
[BEGIN VIDEO CLIP.]
MR. BRIAN KILMEADE: She says that you want to cut firefighters and teachers, that you don’t understand what’s going on in these communities. What do you say to that, Governor?
MR. MITT ROMNEY: Well – [chuckles] – tha- — that’s a very strange accusation. Of course, teachers and firemen and policemen are hired at the local level and also by states. The federal government doesn’t pay for teachers, firefighters or – or policemen, so obviously, that’s completely absurd.
[END OF VIDEO.]
MR. MARTIN: While it is true that firefighters, teachers and police are hired at the local level, it’s not true, as he said, quote, “The federal government doesn’t pay for teachers, firefighters or policemen.”
Let’s take this false statement in order. Teachers. The federal government pays for about 11 percent of local school costs, and Pres. Obama’s federal government stimulus saved 400,000 teaching jobs. Firefighters. Federal grants to local governments of $630 million have paid for 3400 firefighters in 2009 and 2010, with another $640 million already allocated for 2011 and 2012. More money, more fighters. Police. The Congressional Research Service estimated that, as of January 2011, the federal government had paid for the hiring of 117,000 police officers – 117,000. And “The New York Times” reports the stimulus saved another half a million local and state jobs. Even Virginia governor Bob McDonald said himself that the stimulus bill helped Virginia when it came to these type[s] of jobs.
Now, for a guy who has been running for President for about a decade, Romney shouldn’t be in the dark about these facts. So, he’s either ignorant of them or lying – or, what I call the “television butt dance.” That’s when you just sorta do this – [bobs and weaves]. You’re on television, and you start movin’.
Look. We don’t have an award for ignorance, but we do have an award for folks who do this.
[“THE BIGGEST DAMN LIE” BANNER AND FANFARE.]
MR. MARTIN: I’m just sayin’ get the facts together.
To the panel, thank you so very much. Karen, Armstrong, April and Joe, thanks a bunch.
