Detroit— A federal judge refused to replace Kwame Kilpatrick’s legal team and delay the City Hall corruption trial, saying Tuesday she’s not convinced there is a total breakdown between the ex-mayor and his taxpayer-funded attorney.
U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds said Kilpatrick waited too long to complain about his relationship with longtime attorney James C. Thomas and didn’t accept that their relationship is irretrievably broken.
“I don’t accept that,” Edmunds said. “I believe that there is substantial public interest in this case going forward.”
The ruling came after Kilpatrick took the rare step of directly addressing the judge and airing grievances against his lawyer.
