THE DETROIT NEWS: Kwame Kilpatrick Lawyer Asks To Quit Federal Case
Source: Robert Snell / The Detroit News
Detroit— Ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick wants to fire his lawyer because the attorney earlier defended Detroit towing titan Gasper Fiore, who told the FBI he was forced to pay thousands of dollars to the mayor’s political campaign.
Kilpatrick lawyer James C. Thomas asked to quit the case after disclosing the conflict Tuesday in federal court during a hearing to determine if the former mayor needs a new taxpayer-funded legal team.
Kilpatrick is not willing to let another lawyer question Fiore during the trial.
Kilpatrick could learn whether this will prompt the needs to replace his taxpayer-funded legal team, a move that likely would delay his upcoming City Hall corruption trial.
