JACKSON, Miss. – Authorities revealed Friday that the murder suspect who shot a detective at police headquarters in Mississippi’s capital city also fatally shot himself after the attack.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said 23-year-old Jeremy Powell shot Det. Eric Smith before killing himself. Previously, Jackson police did not disclose who fired the shot that killed Powell before the state agency took over the investigation.
The men died in a third-floor room Thursday where Smith was interrogating Powell after his arrest. Powell was arrested in connection with the Monday stabbing death of a 20-year-old Jackson man.
Autopsies were to be performed Friday, said Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart.
