WASHINGTON WATCH: Rev. Al Sharpton Discusses His Weight Loss & Reinvention (VIDEO)

Roland Martin sat down with Rev. Al Sharpton to discuss his weight loss and reinvention.

MR. MARTIN (VOICEOVER):  People have been asking me, “What’s up with Reverend Al Sharpton and his weight?”

So, I asked him.

[INTERVIEW WITH REV. AL SHARPTON.]

MR. MARTIN:  “Newsweek” did a piece on you, “The Reinvention of [the] Reverend Al” Sharpton, and I’ve gotten this question from a lot of people on this whole notion of the reinvention.  So, a lot of folks on Twitter – on social media – they want to say, “What the hell are you not eatin’?”

REV. SHARPTON:  [Laughs.]

MR. MARTIN:  They – I mean I[’ve] got people literally sayin’, “Hey, man, next time you talk to Reverend Al, can you find out is the brutha sick?  What’s goin’ on?”  “What’s happenin’?”

REV. SHARPTON:  No.  I was sick when I was 300-some pounds.

MR. MARTIN:  [Laughs.]

REV. SHARPTON:  I – you know, I stopped eating meat, and –

MR. MARTIN:  All meat?

REV. SHARPTON:  — I don’t eat any meat.  I eat fish twice a week, and I eat, every day, salads and raw fruit, and that’s it.  And I eat a little whole wheat toast so I can work out in the morning, and I lost a lot of weight.

But I’m healthier than I[’ve] ever been, and I feel better than I ever felt.  And I – you know, I tell people all the time that you should’ve worried probably when I was obese.

MR. MARTIN:  [Chuckles.]

REV. SHARPTON:  I feel great now.

And you don’t – you’re right.  People – “He’s either sick,” or I lost weight ’cause I got a TV show.  I didn’t even know I was going on television, [and] I started losing weight.

The reality is that I’m in my late 50s now, and I said, “I need to take this weight off and be healthier.”  And I did, and I am.  And I’m feeling great.

The other thing that — I’m glad you brought that up.  What is interesting to me is when you read about certain political figures in the country – like, I was reading about DOMA recently –

MR. MARTIN:  Right.

REV. SHARPTON:  — the Defense of Marriage Act.  And President Clinton, who signed it, evolved.

I don’t evolve.  I’m “reinvented.”  So, if you or I do something –

MR. MARTIN:  [Chuckles.]

REV. SHARPTON:  — it’s some slick strategy.  We’re “reinvented,” but other people just grew and evolved.

MR. MARTIN:  [Chuckles.]

REV. SHARPTON:  I’m waiting so I can get a “The Evolution of Al Sharpton.”  [Crosstalk] –

MR. MARTIN:  [Laughs.]

REV. SHARPTON:  — get to evolve.

MR. MARTIN:  So, you don’t eat meat, but you still smoke [?] a few cigars.

REV. SHARPTON:  Now, you ain’t supposed to tell trade secrets.  I didn’t say I was –

MR. MARTIN:  [Laughs.]

REV. SHARPTON:  — I didn’t say I was giving up everything.  Cigars are not fattening, Mr. Martin!

MR. MARTIN:  [Laughs.]

REV. SHARPTON:  [Chuckles.]

MR. MARTIN:  Reverend Sharpton, we certainly appreciate.  Thanks –

REV. SHARPTON:  Thank you.

MR. MARTIN:  — a bunch.

REV. SHARPTON:  Thank you.

MR. MARTIN:  All right.

REV. SHARPTON:  All right.

Roland, I was stunned when I saw Al Sharpton earlier this week after Mr. Obama’s speech re Trayvon Martin. If Mr. Sharpton is “watching his weight”, he’s gone overboard!!! He really looks very ill and gaunt. It looks like more to me than a vegetarian diet.

    • ODWms

He raises a good pint though. Did you think he was “overboard” when he weighed in at over 300 lbs?

  • Troyboy

He has a big head don’t match rest of body ? That’s cool as long as he happy !

  • Roseann Taddeo

he looks to skinny not a healthy look lost too much weight I thought he was sick I’m glad he’s not good for him for staying healthy

The last time I looked, fish wasn’t a vegetable, bonehead. Is fish the flesh of an animal? Um, yes. It’s meat. It’s not “red” meat, or “white” meat, but it’s meat, nonetheless. I still think we are going to find out that he’s sick, though. He does NOT look well. He needs to regain a few.

I’ve been overweight all my life and tried so many things. Different things work for different people and I was lucky enough to find one that worked for me. I lost 19 pounds in one month without any exercise and it’s been a life changer. I’m a little embarrased to post my before and after photos here but if anyone actually cares to hear what I’ve been doing then I’d be happy to help in any way. Just shoot me an email at oceanflowers82@gmail.com and I’ll show you my before and after photos, and tell you about how things are going for me with the stuff I’ve tried. I wish someone would have helped me out when I was struggling to find a solution so if I can help you then it would make my day
