ESPN will eliminate jobs from its workforce of 7,000 employees.

“We are implementing changes across the company to enhance our continued growth while smartly managing costs,” the company said in a Tuesday statement. “While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive.”

The company would not say how many jobs are affected.

James Andrew Miller, co-author of the ESPN oral history Those Guys Have All The Fun, tweeted that the number is between 300 and 400. He also spoke to the rare nature of the layoffs for the company.
