Detroit — Monica Conyers is a free and happy woman. She’s just not an especially chatty free woman.
The former Detroit City Council president completes a 37-month prison term for bribery today, and let others do most of the talking for her at a Corktown auto body shop where she’s worked since she began home confinement in January.
“I am happy. I am soooo happy,” she told The Detroit News before declining further comment.
Workers and customers at the shop, Metrotech Automotive Group, were happy to pick up the slack. They’re bracing for a media crush today — when she’s cleared to speak to the media by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons — but they said reporters who show up at the Michigan Avenue business will leave disappointed.
