Roland Maritn and Washington Watch delivers a behind-the-scenes look at the George Lopez Celebrity Golf Classic featuring World Champion Boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard, Actor/Activist Don Cheadle, Cedric the Entertainer and actor Chris Tucker.
MR. MARTIN: Hey, folks. Roland Martin here in L.A., at the George Lopez Golf Tournament. My Twitter buddy here.
George, man, although it’s cloudy and rainy, it’s still going to be a great day.
MR. GEORGE LOPEZ: Well, you know, I managed to put together a great group of guys. You know, no golf tournament can say that they’ve put Cheech and Chong together in the same – and Roland Martin and Adam Levine, Don Cheadle, Joe Mantegna, Andy García, Anthony Anderson –
MR. MARTIN: You[’ve] got Dennis Haysbert, the All State guy, over there.
MR. LOPEZ: — Haysbert – Haysbert. He says we’re in good hands. Not to worry.
MR. MARTIN: [Chuckles.]
[JUMP CUT TO THE GREEN WITH GEORGE LOPEZ AND SUGAR RAY LEONARD]
MR. SUGAR RAY LEONARD: Yeah, man.
MR. LOPEZ: This is going to be on TV One, baby.
MR. MARTIN: This shot will be on the show!
MR. LEONARD: So, special, baby. Love you, man.
[JUMP CUT TO VIGNETTE WITH MR. LEONARD]
MR. LEONARD: I don’t go for a conservative shot. I go for that one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I go for it. I think that’s just being a fighter.
[BACK TO THE GREEN AS LEONARD SWINGS]
OFF CAMERA: That’s what I’m talkin’ about! See?
[THE CROWD REACTS AS LEONARD ACCEPTS HIS PROPS FOR A GREAT SHOT]
OFF CAMERA: See? That’s why you don’t listen to Roland Martin!
[CUT TO MARTIN, LOPEZ AND DON CHEADLE]
MR. MARTIN: So, Don, we’re all going to be on the same team here, and so what are your thoughts? How’s it gonna go?
MR. DON CHEADLE: Well, I’ve started drinking on the first hole already, so I will be well lubricated by the par 3.
MR. MARTIN: Well, I think I’m the only one on our enforcement who doesn’t drink, so I’ll be the one probably driving the cart by the ninth hole.
MR. CHEADLE: Oh, I don’t think we wa- — we’ve got to walk the course. There’re no carts.
MR. MARTIN: Okay. Well, I can’t carry all y’all damn bags.
MR. CHEADLE: Well, we’ll see.
MR. MARTIN: I mean this ain’t “The Legend of Bagger Vance.”
MR. CHEADLE: Well, we’ll see.
[CUT TO VIGNETTE WITH CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER]
MR. MARTIN: Well, I see you got your golf spikes on.
MR. CEDRIC KYLES: Yeah, there’s these new Air Jordan golfers. High tops. High tops. They do these, though – you know, put the spikes on the bottom ‘n’ lace up so – ’cause I got ankle s- — I need ankle support. When I – Roland, when I hit it – see – it’s all – you don’t wanna hurt [yourself]. You know what I’m sayin’? Nobody tryin’ to ruin, you know, your lower extremities.
So, yeah. So, you lace up right here. It’s these Blake Griffins of golf.
[LAUGHTER, CUT TO VIGNETTE WITH CHRIS TUCKER]
MR. MARTIN: Now, lemme tell you how this works. I text[ed] Chris to say I was in L.A., and he said, “Aw, man. George’s golf tournament? Send me his number so I can come on out.”
MR. CHRIS TUCKER: [Chuckles.] No, no, no. He saved me, ’cause I’ve been trying to play golf for a whole year. And Roland texted me. This is the most thorough brother I ever met in my life, and I didn’t miss the tournament because of him. And I appreciate it.
I ain’t gon’ give you no money! But I appreciate you callin’ me.
MR. MARTIN: Even though it’s cloudy as hell and rainy, you got shades on.
MR. TUCKER: Ain’t nothin’ wrong with this. This is beautiful! I love the rain! This is beautiful.
God bless you. I’mmo beat you, too.
MR. MARTIN: He musta got Orange Juice Jones playin’.
[JUMP TO THE GREEN AS TUCKER SWINGS]
MR. TUCKER: Oh! Come on! Come on!
MR. LOPEZ: Hit another one, Chris.
[TUCKER SWINGS AGAIN, THEN CUT TO A JUBILLANT TUCKER WITH LOPEZ]
MR. TUCKER: Whoa! Take that!
[RETURN TO STUDIO]
MR. MARTIN: That was actually Chris’ fifth shot on that hole, so – forget about it.
Well, as you can see, we had a great time for a great cause, the George Lopez Foundation. Their website is georgelopez.com/lopez-foundation. Well, just read the bottom of the screen right here. The foundation’s mission is to create positive, permanent change for underprivileged children, adults and military families confronting challenges in education and health, as well as increasing community awareness about kidney disease and organ donation.
And I want to thank George Lopez for inviting me to play. I look forward to playing next year.
