Just last month, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) was battling with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) during a Congressional hearing on Benghazi. But today, Cummings and Issa sat side by side, seemingly united in opposition to IRS spending they deemed “wasteful.”
Cummings tore into IRS officials who were testifying before House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Thursday morning over reports of excess spending on conferences and training videos. The congressman said he found the videos, which include IRS employees learning how to line-dance, to be “appalling” and “have no redeeming value.” But what really made him angry was thinking about his constituents “who get the early bus” and just want to know they will be “treated fairly” by the IRS.
“But guess what?” Cummings asked IRS official Faris Fink, who was responsible for spending $50,000 on parody videos for a 2010 conference. “The money that was spent on that–That’s my money! That’s the lady who got the early bus this morning. That’s her money. The one who makes $35,000, her. The gentleman up the street from my who makes 45, hauling trash. That’s their money! So, it was wasted.”
