Oprah Winfrey once called Newark Mayor Cory Booker a “rock star.” Now the media giant is going to help him raise money for his Senate bid.
Winfrey is hosting a fundraiser in Jersey City on Thursday for Booker, who is leading all public opinion polls for the Democratic nomination in New Jersey’s special election to replace the late senator Frank Lautenberg.
Winfrey’s moniker for Booker goes back to 2010, when Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on her talk show that he would be donating $100 million to help improve Newark’s schools. Booker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, struck up a friendship with Zuckerberg through that appearance and donation.
The primary is Aug. 13. Tickets to the fundraiser range from $1,000 to $2,600, the Associated Press reports.
