President Obama: Trayvon Martin ‘Could Have Been Me’

President Barack Obama emerged Friday to give voice to African Americans’ reaction to last weekend’s verdict in the George Zimmerman case, saying that Trayvon Martin “could have been me.”

In a surprise appearance in the White House press room Friday, Obama recalled his remarks after the shooting that, if he had a son, he would have looked like Martin, Obama said: “Another way of saying that is, ‘Trayvon Martin could have been me,’ 35 years ago.”
