The Detroit City Council today picked Saunteel Jenkins as its new council president to replace Charles Pugh, who suddenly stopped showing up to meetings three weeks ago and remains in seclusion.
The council, which is down to six members who regularly attend meetings, also chose Councilman Andre Spivey as president pro tem, its second-ranking member.
Jenkins, who was elected to her first term in 2009, thanked council members for their support and said becoming president was unimaginable weeks ago.
“With everything that’s going on right now in the city, we need some leadership,” she said after today’s meeting. “So I’m glad we finally have some leadership in place.”
