On his show Monday morning, Joe Scarborough tore into Sean Hannity for the latter’s attempt to link Trayvon Martin and Barack Obama through their allegedly similar drug history. If this is “the new standard,” Scarborough wondered, then are white kids on college campuses “fair game” as well?
Hannity made his remarks on his Friday radio show, in quick response to Obama’s speech on the Martin shooting:
“Now the president’s saying Trayvon could’ve been me thirty-five years ago. This is a particularly helpful comment. Is that the president admitting that—I guess because, what, he was part of the Choom Gang and he smoked pot and he did a little blow? I’m not sure how to interpret that, because we know that Trayvon had been smoking pot that night. I’m not sure what that means.”
“Really?” Scarborough asked Monday. “Is that the new standard? Would we like to go across college campuses in America and tell all white boys that if they have marijuana in their system, then they’re fair game?”
“It’s straight out of Reefer Madness,” Scarborough said. “‘I hear he had marijuana in his system.’ You’ve seen Reefer Madness. You know what happens. Really? Really? In 2013, Sean? Come on! Whatever excuse there is to say this young black man had it coming to him, that is the defense. Because there is no defense for shooting down a young black man, in a middle class neighborhood, armed with Skittles.”
