A chase that began with a black Lexus ramming a barricade near the White House on Thursday ended 16 blocks away with gunfire on Capitol Hill and the brief lockdown of the U.S. Capitol.
The woman driving the car is believed to be dead, said a federal law enforcement official citing preliminary reports. The official is not authorized to comment publicly.
The driver’s identity has not been disclosed. A young child inside the car reportedly was not injured.
Terrance Gainer, the Sergeant at Arms of the U.S. Senate, said the driver led federal authorities on a high-speed chase.
