MLK Estate Wants His Daughter To Give Up His Nobel Peace Prize

Source: AP / ABC News

The estate of Martin Luther King Jr. is asking a judge to force the civil rights icon’s daughter to relinquish her father’s Nobel Peace Prize and “traveling bible.”

The complaint against Bernice King was filed Friday in Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta by her father’s estate, which is controlled by her brothers, Martin Luther King III and Dexter King.

The lawsuit says Martin Luther King Jr.’s heirs in 1995 assigned their rights to property inherited from the civil rights icon to the Estate of Martin Luther King Jr. Inc. The lawsuit says Bernice King has “secreted and sequestered” the peace prize and “traveling bible” in violation of that agreement.

Bernice King did not immediately return a message left with the spokesman for the King Center, where she is CEO.

I am tired of them fighting over everything. Those items should be in a museum. Period.

Do what is right and fair. Her parents would be troubled because after all of their fighting for fairness and peace, their own children cannot get along and abide by the law the perpetuation of their father’s legacy. This is just sad. As a daughter, I know that you just want to hold on to a piece of your Dad, Bernice. But your Dad chose to give himself to history for change. The unfortunately thing is that change the dynamic of you and your sibling’s inheritance.

These items should at the Civil Rights Museum in Atlanta. Not in anyone’s personal possession. For the items safety and importance to American History they should be in a museum able to be viewed by all. Sitting in her safe is not benefitting history, although I do appreciate Bernice King’s feelings that the items should not be sold for monetary gain. That’s just plain wrong and I don’t understand how Dexter and MLK III can justify that at all. Just wish they would stop the fighting and uphold their father’s legacy with dignity. Their infighting and bickering is weighing badly on them as the children of one the greatest men in history and threatening to tarnish their fathers legacy!!

How much more dysfunctional is this family going to become? It seems like greed is destroying this family.

The bickering and in fighting with these children is a SHAME to MLK name

Totally ridiculous!! We should all boycott the King Center to shed light on their actions. The legacy (tangible items) of Dr. King may very well be their personal possessions but at some point please understand the impact these “artifacts” have on the general public. I don’t know the whole story behind the law suit but I sure would love to see his Nobel Peace Prize with my own eyes. -Better days ahead.

My God , The Nobel Peace Prize and His Bible is sacred and should be kept with the family . There is no amount of money can replace such valuable items and his sons should be ashamed of themselves . If times are that bad then you do what your parents as always told you to do and that is Pray , humble yourselves and and have faith. I PRAY TO GOD OUR FATHER THAT THOSE ITEMS REMAIN WITH THE DAUGHTER IN A SACRED PLACE .IN JESUS NAME AMEN ! Dr. Bernice don’t you worry about a thing God has it under control.

Dear Dr Bernice King, as one in your family taking the spiritual lead, knowing how your father showed the World, how love and unity in the Human Family was worth dying for. And that money and things was that of His Bible understanding from Wise King Solomon. ECCLESIASTES 3; More else we all came to love your Father for sharing the understanding of God’s Word The Bible. The Word of God has no value as a “Artifacts” only when we open it and read it and start listening to Jehovah God and repent, applying it in our life’s that’s what makes its “Priceless”. Your Father said he looked over and saw the Promise Land do all you can to help you and your brothers to be there together. Hon-nor their headship. All of us love your dad for who he was, what he taught us about love, and money and things are just that . Jesus would have [just let it go] Help keep the family together. In that way you show “You” and your “Brothers” that you truly are following the ways of Jesus as your Father and Mother did being True to who you say you are. May the End of this story give God the Glory not Satan. that you have love for one another even when you all disagree.

These items are historical in nature and are a part of american history and should be in the possession of a national museum or the King center for the world to see. This preserves history and eliminates family feuds. The goal is to honor the life through these items not to place value on them or use them as an object to defeat his life works. This it’s very unfortunate and shameful to be used by the enemy to overshadow a mans life’s work.
