AUSTIN – A 21-year-old aspiring rapper from Killeen was charged Friday with one count of capital murder, accused of ramming a speeding car into a South by Southwest festival crowd as he fled a police drunken-driving stop.
Two people were killed and 23 others were injured in the early Thursday rampage, police said.
Rashad Charjuan Owens, a father of six who had been in Austin to perform at a club, was ordered held in the Travis County Jail in lieu of $3 million bail.
He was arrested by officers after crashing a four-door Honda sedan into the crowd outside The Mohawk Club about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, hitting a moped, a bicycle, a taxi and a parked van before coming to rest against a curb. Police said he fled the vehicle, and had to be subdued with a Taser after a brief chase.
