HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The mother of a sailor killed aboard a guided-missile destroyer at the world’s largest naval base says she’s heartbroken.
Sitting on a couch at her home here, Sharon Blair broke down in tears when as she talked about her youngest son, Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo, a military policeman at Naval Station Norfolk.
“I want my baby. I want him home,” Blair said.
Mayo, 24, died late Monday protecting his shipmates at the Navy base about 200 miles away, Navy officials say. Mayo came to the aid of a fellow sailor who had been disarmed by a civilian attempting to get on the USS Mahan.
