Mike Krzyzewski has become a mentor to LeBron James since taking the United States men’s national team job in 2006, and Coach K’s message for LeBron James before he decided to rejoin the Cleveland Cavaliers was simple: do what’s right for you. Krzyzewski, who will lead Team USA at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain beginning in August (which James is not participating in), said Monday that he told James to look out for himself in making the biggest decision of the NBA offseason.
“I just told him, ‘Do what you feel you need to do. You don’t owe anybody, you owe yourself.’ He didn’t need any advice from me.”
Coach K also said that James has the chance to turn Kyrie Irving, who played one season for Krzyzewski at Duke before the Cavaliers drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick in 2011, into one of the best players in the league.
