In the name of transparency following the outrage over the fatal shooting of unarmed teenagerMichael Brown by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer last week, St. Louis police have put out cell phone video that shows two officers shooting and killing a man who approached them brandishing a knife and yelling “Shoot me!”

Police identified the man as 25-year-old Kajieme Powell, who was suspected of stealing from a nearby convenience store. Officers arrived on the scene after receiving two separate 911 calls reporting Powell’s erratic behavior. The two officer fired a combined 12 shots at Powell, killing him instantly, after he refused to drop the steak knife he was holding and continued moving towards them.

Here is a copy of the St. Louis police report regarding the incident:

THIS IS A HARD ONE. I THINK IF I WAS A COP, I WOULD SHOOT THIS GUY. HE WAS TO CLOSE WITH THE KNIFE, SUICIDE BY COP CASE.

Not one did that boy reach in his waist band to get a knife like that police lied and said nor did anyone see a knife so why is it being reported as such! Media is no better than those deceitful officers!

1:28 he pulled the knife out of his pocket blade facing forward. People choose to see what they *want* to see.

The larger question is why police officers are so conditioned to using lethal force (usually disproportionate) on African Americans while a great deal of discernment is used on Caucasians? The underlying theme is that they don’t value African American lives as much as they do other races. Conversely, African Americans need to do more to demolish the stereotypes seemingly given cause for Caucasians to approach them with a specific mindset and posture in anticipation of the being a certain way. Combating injustice with violence surely won’t fix this. Let’s start by being examples and fixing our households first, so that one day we’re able to combat this injustice in a more appropriate and respectable manner.

I partially agree… there are departments that do not have tazers however… but even if they did how many people are up in arms about cops using tazers also? The bottom line is this guy wanted to get shot and it was very apparent. he was w/in 5 to 8 feet walking towards police with knife facing them. I would have shot him too… although I might have tried to hit him with a leg shot, but cops aren’t trained to wound. If you fire you shoot to kill.

Brandon, it’s not about the guys wanting to get shot and I understand police aren’t trained to wound. However, they are trained to use judgement. First, the knife was not a huge threat to two handguns drawn on a likely untrained, knife-wielding individual. Then, the guys was shot 12 times. Seriously? Clear disproportionate use of force! Try removing African American and inserting Caucasian and I bet there will be a significantly higher probability of a different outcome. Just saw your video as well. Your attempting to mix apples and oranges here. The circumstances were totally different. Besides, how old is that video. Meaning, it’s not often that we hear/see Caucasian police officers ‘executing’ unarmed or mildly armed Caucasians, whereas it has become the norm in our society for the inverse to occur. Simply put, racial is and always be alive and well here in America and around the world. It’s convenient for YOU to say stop using the race card because our history is what it is. Again, put the shoe on the other foot and have me tell you stop pulling the race card; wouldn’t be comforting.

why does time have anything to do with it… and look at the video… where did the guy fall? he was almost under the damn car door. don’t tell me he wasn’t a threat lol. I “may” give you excessive amount of bullets but when the white swat guys killed the white shotgun guy they shot him more than once or twice too… Anytime something like this happens in todays world EVERYONE Immediately pulls the race card and it’s bullshit… if that had been a crazed white guy he would have fallen dead in the exact same spot and you know it. Shame on you for making this racial.

Brandon, not making this racial at all; simply shedding light on the racial undertones that led to this event transpiring the way that it did. Again, I acknowledge your video and do no see the relevance. Yes, white swat killed a white man using disproportionate force. However, very different circumstances than what took place in Missouri. See attached pic to sum up the crux of my explanation.

i don’t know all these guys but the top left one and he was found on the ground with his hands on his head behind the theater… and i wish they’d pumped him full of lead also… but he didn’t engage the swat team that was on him either. had he walked towards those officers with a knife drawn the world would have been a better place…. Not a fair example.

also please see a more recent video above in earlier comment that i was trying to illustrate….
