Black Women’s Roundtable Blasts Lack Of Black Women On NFL’s Social Responsibility Team

From the Black Women’s Roundtable

Dear Mr. Goodell,

We, the undersigned members of the Black Women’s Roundtable, an intergenerational network of women leaders representing Black women and girls from across the country are writing to request an emergency meeting with you to share our deep concern and outrage about the plethora of domestic violence cases that has been exposed involving current and past players that are a part of the National Football League (NFL).  In addition, we would like to discuss your recent decision to establish an advisory group of women to assist you in developing new policies to eradicate domestic violence within the NFL; and other diversity issues within the NFL.

The Black Women’s Roundtable appreciates the fact that the NFL has established an advisory group of women to assist in “development and implementation of the league’s policies, resources and outreach on issues of domestic violence and sexual assault.” However, your lack of inclusion of women of color, especially Black women who are disproportionately impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault; and the fact that over 66% of the NFL players are made up of African Americans is unacceptable.

The Black Women’s Roundtable 2014 Report released in March 2014 found that Black women are the most likely group of women in America to experience domestic violence.  Further, we are nearly three times as likely to die as a result of domestic violence than white women.  And while we are only 8% of the population, we make up 22% of the homicides that result from domestic violence and 29% of all women who are victimized.  In fact, domestic violence is the leading causes of death for Black women between the ages of 15 to 35, yet we are less likely than others to seek help when we are abused.

As a result of the specific circumstances of Black women and the fact that the majority of the players in the NFL are African American, addressing this issue in a culturally competent way requires the inclusion of Black women.

The Black Women’s Roundtable has been in constant consultation with other civil rights and domestic violence women of color organizations including leaders of the Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community, National Urban League, National Action Network, National Organization of Sisters of Color Ending Sexual Assault, National African American Clergy Network and others; and we will share with you additional recommendations in the coming days.

Thank you in advance for your consideration of our urgent request to meet with you and your colleagues at the NFL. We will follow-up with your office and look forward to meeting with you at your earliest convenience to share with you our recommendations to ensure that the NFL gets it right moving forward.

Sincerely,

Is it not always the way it is? Blacks get the bad publicity, Whites reap the financial benefits! Black men have now become the international faces of wife and child abuses even though these things are rampant in White communities, including actual murdering of wives and children! The Texas judge who was caught on camera beating her daughter have not received the type of negative media the Black man is getting for using a switch on his son; the White judge from Alabama who beat his wife in a hotel in Atlanta has not received the same negative press that the Black man who punched his wife in a casino elevator has been receiving. There have not been any calls for these White men to lose their jobs and be barred from practicing law or being judges ever again; however, Whites from trailer parks to the United States Congress have all become apoplectic over NFL Black men who have been accused of committing these crimes; they want the Black men to be jailed and dispossessed of everything they own! This is the same way they tried to destroy Michael Vick over dogs; yet, they do not call for the jailing and permanent employment barn on White police officers who kill Blacks in cold blood with reckless abandon.
Unfortunately, they have their Black mascots, who they use to demonize Blacks. I saw one such mascot espousing the boycotting of Mayweather, because according to her, Mayweather should lose his job the same way Sterling lost his team. They analogize that supporting the NFL, unless they ban these Black men, is akin to supporting wife abuse. However, the mascots and their sponsors did not see that Sterling became richer for racism against Blacks. They have not advocated boycotting Mr. Steve Ballmer for encouraging racism by paying Sterling double what his Clippers was worth while Rice lost his contract. Is supporting the Clippers and the NBA not supporting racism, if we use their warped logic?
While I do not support the actions of the Black men implicated in these abuse cases, I despise the way these Whites and their Black mascots seem to make Blacks the scapegoats in everything vile! It’s time that Blacks in the media start bringing this up whenever they want to make Blacks the poster children for evil. Thank God for Mr. L.Z. Ganderson, who had the effrontery to bring-up the issue of the disparate treatment between Rice and the White Alabama judge. Wake-up Black America; stop letting your enemies create narratives concerning your people for you!

Black women are using the Whites’ “fuzzy math” of using “per capita” percentages to validate the racist propaganda narrative that Black men commit more sexual assault and domestic violence than Whites. It’s quite pathetic that these intelligent Black women have fallen for the same narrative that is used to demonize Black men.
NB: I completely support the women’s indignation that no Black women was part of this group of White women that were hired; I also support their indignation about the fact that they face domestic violence. HOWEVER, I despise the fact that they have adopted the racist propaganda against Black men by use of “fuzzy math” to make Black men the boogie men of sexual assault and domestic violence. Just pathetic!

This is not surprising, America only wants to see Blacks as causing the problems, not to help solve them. They want to poster Blacks in negative light, not positive. Why wouldn’t Black Women opinions be just as useful as other women? After all domestic violence affects them to (remember Ray Rice video, HELLO,the woman he hit was Black,) I still feel like they just used Ray’s situation to take away his career, after all, this type of problem was a problem long before this young man was born. And since everyone’s seen this video “NOW” it’s a problem? “NOW” we have apps for domestic violence? “NOW”?
