“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

Listen to Martin explain the how Southern states used the prison system and slave patrols, now called police departments to “arrest Black people on trumped up charges in order to maximize their free labor in prison.”
